WHEN THEY CAN’T SEEM TO FOLLOW BASIC INSTRUCTIONS - LEAD WITH CLEAR INTENT
“When I was younger, even before joining the military I would be regularly accused of ‘over thinking things’. I would be given an assignment and my brain would go to work instantly, not always correctly, but instantly on working out a solution. Simultaneously my brain would begin looking for alternatives to whatever prescribe method of completing the task had been proposed or in their mind, directed, instructed, commanded and expected. My brain was looking for challenges, problems and potential pitfalls. I was not instructed to do that. Many of my teachers, bosses, leaders, coaches wanted to know if I could or would simply ‘follow the instructions given’. In other words would I comply, or would I think freely? This was not just an issue when I was young, the compliance test is on going even now. Leaders must lead with integrity and clear intent not manipulation.”
