When raising children, the idea of protecting them from all sorts of damage, pain, trauma, lost time is the #1 priority of parents.

As children grow older, the intent is to advise them, inform them, train them and prepare them to continue this protection on their own. The role of a leader, especially as a mentor is the same. Providing insight, warnings, cautions, admonishment is essential to the development of future leaders. Selfish, envious, egotistical leaders often see a well developed, well rounded, secure, confident young leader as a threat to be squelched. Guarding the heart, mind, eyes and ears of developing young leaders will give them the surety of survival in a world which sees them as a threat.
